How to Choose the Right Projector Lift — A Buying Guide

The three numbers that determine which projector lift you need are: ceiling height, projector weight, and required drop distance. Get these three right and every other specification falls into place. Here is how to calculate each.

Step 1 — Calculate your required drop distance

The drop distance is the length of travel from the ceiling housing down to the projector's operating position. To calculate it: measure your ceiling height, subtract the ideal projector position height (typically 2.4–2.8 m from the floor for a standard throw projector), and add 20–30 cm for the projector body and mounting hardware.

Example: 3.5 m ceiling minus 2.6 m ideal projector position = 0.9 m required drop. The PRJ M1 (3 feet / 91 cm) would be the correct choice. For a 4.5 m ceiling with the same ideal position: 4.5 – 2.6 = 1.9 m required drop — the PRJ M2 or PRJ M4 (5 feet / 152 cm) is correct.

Step 2 — Verify projector weight against the lift capacity

Always use the projector's actual weight from the manufacturer's specification sheet, not an estimate. Add 20% safety margin — if your projector weighs 22 kg, specify a lift rated for at least 26 kg. The PRJ M1 and M2 (18″ frame) handle up to 15 kg and 30 kg respectively — suitable for most home theatre and conference room projectors. For heavier laser projectors and large-venue units, the PRJ M3, M4 (24″ frame, 60 kg) and PRJ M10 (30″ frame, 100 kg) cover virtually any commercial projector on the market.

Step 3 — UST projectors need a completely different solution

Ultra Short Throw projectors cannot use a conventional ceiling drop lift because their lens geometry requires them to sit very close to and below the screen surface. The correct solution is the DM 350D motorised drawer mechanism (for furniture or cabinet installations) or the DM 350T table-top slider (for surfaces and credenzas). These motorise the horizontal sliding of the UST projector into and out of its operating position, concealing it completely when not in use.

The PRJ M2 — India's most popular projector lift

For the majority of Indian boardrooms, conference rooms, and home theatres with ceiling heights between 3.0 m and 4.5 m and projectors weighing under 30 kg, the PRJ M2 (5 feet drop, 18″ frame) is the correct and most popular specification. It drops 152 cm — enough for any standard ceiling height in India — fits an 18″ × 18″ ceiling cutout, and handles projectors up to 30 kg. This covers the vast majority of Sony, Epson, BenQ, Optoma, and Barco installations in commercial environments.

Installation requirements for motorised projector lifts

  • Ceiling cutout: The lift frame must fit within a precise ceiling opening. Ensure structural beams allow the cutout size (18″, 24″, or 30″ square) at your chosen position.
  • Power supply: All Tono projector lifts require a 230V power connection at the ceiling for the motor drive. This should be planned during construction or fit-out.
  • Control integration: Tono lifts include RF remote control. They can also be integrated with Crestron, Control4, AMX, and other building automation systems via dry contact input.
  • Load-bearing ceiling: The lift plus projector weight must be supported by the ceiling structure, not just the plasterboard. A structural fixing to a beam or dedicated bracket is required.

FAQs

Projector Lift — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a motorised projector lift and how does it work?
A motorised projector lift is a ceiling-mounted mechanism that holds your projector concealed inside a housing when not in use, then lowers it to its operating position at the touch of a button or remote command. The motor drives a scissors or column mechanism that extends downward with the projector mounted on it, stopping at a precise pre-set height. When the projector session ends, the lift retracts and the projector disappears back into the ceiling. Tono Systems projector lifts include RF remote control and can integrate with Crestron, Control4, and AMX automation systems.
Which projector lift is right for my boardroom?
For a typical Indian boardroom with a ceiling height of 3.0–4.5 m and a projector weighing under 30 kg, the Tono PRJ M2 (5 feet drop, 18″ frame, 30 kg capacity) is the most common specification. If your projector weighs more than 30 kg — typical for large-venue laser units — choose the PRJ M4 (5 feet drop, 24″ frame, 60 kg capacity). Measure your ceiling height, subtract 2.5–2.6 m (the ideal operating height), and that gives you the minimum drop distance required.
What is the motorised projector lift price in India?
Tono motorised projector lift prices in India start from approximately ₹45,000 for the PRJ M1 (3 feet, 15 kg) and range up to ₹2,50,000+ for the PRJ M10 (10 feet, 100 kg) and specialist UST slider mechanisms. The most popular model for commercial use — the PRJ M2 (5 feet, 30 kg) — is priced in the ₹75,000–1,00,000 range. Contact Tono Systems for current pricing as it varies with dollar exchange rates. All prices are ex-works Mumbai; installation costs are separate and depend on ceiling type and location.
Can a projector lift be integrated with a control system?
Yes — all Tono projector lifts include RF remote control as standard and support integration with professional AV control systems including Crestron, Control4, AMX, Savant, and RTI via dry contact (relay) input. This allows the projector lift to be triggered automatically when a meeting room scene is activated, or when the projector is powered on or off via the control system. For Crestron and Control4 integrations, Tono provides the necessary driver documentation.
What is the difference between the PRJ M2 and PRJ M4?
Both the PRJ M2 and PRJ M4 drop 5 feet (152 cm), but they differ in frame size and weight capacity. The PRJ M2 uses an 18″ × 18″ ceiling frame and supports projectors up to 30 kg — ideal for most standard and short-throw projectors. The PRJ M4 uses a larger 24″ × 24″ frame and supports projectors up to 60 kg — required for heavy laser projectors, large-venue units, and 3-chip projectors commonly used in auditoriums and large conference rooms. Choose M2 for most boardrooms; choose M4 if your projector exceeds 30 kg.

Why Choose a Tono Motorised Projector Lift in India?

Office conference rooms, school auditoriums, and home theatres across India rely on Tono motorised projector lifts to keep spaces clean, projectors safe, and presentations professional. A fixed ceiling-mounted projector collects dust, risks accidental damage, and clutters the room’s appearance. A motorised projector lift system solves all three problems — the projector is completely hidden when not in use and descends to its precise operating position automatically.

Tono projector lifts are built for the Indian commercial environment — rated for continuous operation, compatible with Indian power supply, and available with full installation support across Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR and all major cities in India. Every ceiling projector lift comes with RF remote control, adjustable travel speed, and soft-start / soft-stop motor control for smooth, quiet operation.
